Dear good people -
Here’s my once-every-5-years newsletter. The reverse of spam.
This newsletter eats spam.
What a bonkers 5 years it has been, let alone the past year. I really hope you & those you love are healthy and making it thru. Recently I heard designer and activist, Julia Watson, give a lecture about Design by Radical Indigenism - she mentioned humans shifting “from ‘Survival of the Fittest’ to ‘Survival of the Symbiotic’. That seems necessary and a more natural way to exist. Neighbors, community, nature, mutual aid, allies together.
One thing, among many, that’s impressed me these past ten months has been seeing some people try things they’ve never done before. Starting new, beginning, struggling, making mistakes, practicing, learning, getting better. People remembering and returning to things they enjoyed long ago and had forgotten they loved —or picking up something completely new. Using their hands for making & creating. That’s really something.
When the lockdown started I decided to get outside and draw.
For years, decades actually, I’ve collected sounds for myself. Can’t tell you how many recordings of subway platforms and screeches and scrapes of buses and ferries I have… a lot. When I listen to the recordings It conjures up the entire scene, even years later. Many times, when out sketching in the city, I record sounds.
*NOTE: Better with headphones.
These first two paintings were done during the early months of the ‘lockdown’. I’ve paired the image with recordings from this time, inside the video. Those early months felt like a madmax movie. Often I was the lone pedestrian on the side of the road while dozens of motorcycles would blast past me, doing wheelies for blocks. Motorcycles, skateboarders and the wind.
The third image & video is a pre-covid sketch, with animation projected onto it and edited with field recordings. The recording is from a montage sound piece I’d made for an open project called Disquiet Juno, at the end of 2019. I’d forgotten about it until I recently stumbled upon the recording. I was surprised and captivated by the sounds in a completely new way. Crowds, a tight spaced city, big open mouths freely breathing all over one other, singing, swearing. The closeness. I’m including the piece because maybe you will find the sounds comforting like I did on re-listen.
This newsletter is being sent to wave a flag of greeting and to let you know I have a new website (well..an evolving website).
www.judgeworks.com
This past year I’ve had a chance to deep dive into my archives and catalog of works, and in doing so I’ve re-discovered a number of works and prints. I’ve created a store and made as much available as possible- more will be added over the next month.
Many original drawings, scratchboards and ‘last’ prints in limited print runs. A number of these artworks are available for sale for the first time. Check out the numerous screenprints, woodblock prints, Risographs, & Giclee prints. It could be a bit overwhelming so try using the handy search bar and type in names or subjects to narrow down the selection. Shipping is free until Feb 23rd (only able to ship to the US & Canada at this time).
If you’re up for more exploring, checkout the links below for a partial list of friends’ words, music and images for you to visit.
Be well and thrive-
